Be On Your Own Journey

If you’ve ever been to a personal development seminar then you’ll know that you that you can sit there for hours and be interested in what the presenter has to say yet still be thinking about what you have to make for dinner, or where you’re going to be tomorrow. Unfortunately life is just so busy these days that even your thoughts are multi-tasking. Then, out of the blue this presenter will make a passing comment (often not even related to the topic) that actually hits you for six!

Yes, that ah-ha moment (aka the ‘lightbulb’ moment) is when you suddenly gain instant clarity (and stillness of mind!). So I had one of these moments the other day when I was at Roger Hamilton’s Wealth Dynamics Seminar. And all it was that he said was: “don’t be on someone else’s journey!” That was it … don’t be on someone else’s journey. It wasn’t even to do with wealth!

How many times have people told you to do what YOU want to do? My guess is hundreds of times. Yet if you’re like most of us, you get so caught up in being a mother/father, brother/sister, husband/wife, son/daughter, friend/colleague … that you forget to just BE you!

You may be so caught up in rushing through life that you’re simply not having any “me time” during the week, or you may be so caught up living or supporting someone else’s life that you have completely lost sense of who you really are and what YOUR journey is suppose to be.

Yes these are two extremes, yet it all starts with you stepping up and taking responsibility for the life you want to lead. You can’t blame someone else for consuming your time, you’re giving it to them. You can’t blame someone else for spending your money, you’re handing it over to them. And you certainly can’t blame someone else for squashing your dreams, you’re letting them slip away yourself.

So what can you do now to get back on your own journey? Well start with the little things – take 30mins out each day to do something for you. It may be to read a book, go for a walk or meditate. As you start to feel confident in this (that you’re not actually being selfish, rather self-preservative) then you can expand into more time-consuming activities – perhaps join a sporting team, take up an art or cooking class or treat yourself to a weekend away every couple of months.

If you feel confident that you can get back on your own journey, then great – start now! If you have doubts about when you’ll find the time or what exactly it is that you want to do, then register now and have a chat with a coach. You’ll be amazed at how much you can actually fit in when you make the conscious decision to start taking care of yourself.

And just remember: Whatever it is you choose to do – make sure its fun for YOU. You’ll soon notice that the happier you are, the happier the people around you are too and the more they’ll support you in what you’re doing. And if they’re not, well they’re probably just caught up in their many roles and haven’t discovered your little “secret” yet …
