Path of Least Resistance

When we are doing things we often do the same as last time, we have habits and often times this dictates our actions. This is being in auto pilot and we just go through our actions in an automatic way without really thinking about it.

Another way of looking at this is going down the path of least resistance. We go there every time and our body has an express route to get there. When we are in this habitual trance as I like to call it, we are really not thinking about what we are doing, it just happens. For example exercise, your body is trained to go there in a certain sequence and it just does it when you go for a jog for example, or go cycling. Can be any sport, your body knows what to do.

So when we stay on this road of least resistance, we do not learn new ways, we prefer the old way because it is effortless and well by now a natural way to do things.

If you learn a new sport, example golf, then this is a whole new category and you need to breakdown the actual task and model of someone who is already competent in it. This will give you a good learning model and then you can have a go, your muscles are fired at a specific sequence and your body is learning to adapt.

When we learn new ways of ‘being’ this is also the case. To go somewhere new, before was too hard, challenging and maybe confrontational. You have learnt a new way of being and you are implementing these changes at home, sure you will be tested, and that is true, just stay on your course and be the person you want to be. If you have a coach that is there for you, contact them for support, as they believe in you and they can be your emotional support. You have changed for a reason, you were operating from the path of least resistance and now you are doing something new, learning a new way and new neural pathways are firing in your brain, so acknowledge that there is a ‘newness’ to it and just relax.

Debrief with someone like your coach, support is always there for you.

Just like learning how to do a golf swing with balancing your club, feet positioning and inner core, changing a behaviour can seem strange at first and then it becomes more automatic and then you are living your authentic life.
